This "Secret Make-up" by makeup artist Thomas de Kluyver of Gucci Beauty is perfect for summer.
In summer , makeup can be done quickly, and the fewer products you need to take on vacation, the better. The perfect solution: The "Secret Makeup" by Thomas de Kluyver, Global Makeup Artist at Gucci Beauty. In this interview, he also reveals his favorite tricks for hot days: How does foundation stay where it belongs, even at 30 degrees Celsius? How do you apply blush to look like you've just returned from vacation? And what are the coolest makeup trends for this summer? The expert has the answer.
VOGUE: What is the most common makeup mistake you see over and over again?
Thomas de Kluyver: I don't know if you can really call it a "mistake"—makeup is something very personal, a part of one's identity and form of expression. But I do think sometimes people wear makeup that just doesn't suit them. When buying makeup, you should really only choose things you love and feel a connection to. If it doesn't feel authentic or right, then maybe that's when it becomes a mistake.
I like the idea of thinking of makeup more as a fashion accessory —something you play with—rather than something you have to wear. Wearing makeup because you think you have to, rather than because you want to , can feel fake.
What is the best makeup trick you've learned over the years?
One of my favorite tricks is what I call "secret makeup." It's all about adding subtle accents: a touch of mascara , just at the base of the lashes, to define the eye without looking overly made-up—Gucci Beauty's Le Magnétisme mascara is perfect for this understated look. Then a touch of lipstick, which you also dab on the cheeks. That's the great thing about Gucci Beauty lipsticks—they work for both lips and cheeks. Then I apply a little concealer, which I apply under the eyes, on the sides of the nose, to the left and right of the corners of the mouth, and on the cheekbones—this subtly lifts the face. My tip: Choose concealer a shade lighter than your skin tone—this enhances the lifting effect.
